Tyron Woodley receives numerous stitches following gruesome cut suffered against Gilbert Burns

Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley had barely broken a sweat in his main event fight against Gilbert Burns on Saturday night before he was down on the ground with a pool of blood collecting behind his head.

An opening flurry from Burns put Woodley on the canvas and the Brazilian followed up with a barrage of ground-and-pound strikes. That included one slicing elbow that opened a gruesome cut over Woodley’s left eye.

Thankfully, the UFC cut man was able to stave off the bleeding so the wound didn’t really affect Woodley for the remainder of the 25-minute main event. Afterwards, the ex-champ had to get a number of stitches to repair the damage done during the fight.

“I got a nice little cut you can’t see cause I got the best freaking plastic surgeon dude on Earth, Dr. Greg [Hsu], hooked me up with some stitches,” Woodley said during an Instagram Live chat. “So I got 3,000 stitches in my eye. Like three or four layers of stitches cause my sh*t was wide open.”

Following the end of the event, Dr. Hsu posted a photo of the stitch work he completed on Woodley’s eye to close the nasty cut opened up by Burns in round one.

Despite the severity of the cut, Woodley seems poised for a quick recovery thanks to the stitch work. While there’s no word on how quickly the former champion will turn around to fight again, he sounded determined to bounce back following his second straight defeat.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t come out with the win,” Woodley said during the UFC post-fight show. “I’m still going to hold my head high and I’m going to come back cause I’m a champion.”
